Empowering students to develop their full potential and to create life-long learning and passions in visual arts.

The Regional Visual Arts Program.

Welcome to our regional visual arts program at Mayfield Secondary School.

The Regional Visual Arts program empowers students to explore their creative expression, develop their confidence, and find their voice in the area of visual arts.

We offer a program of specialized courses to students interested in in-depth studies in visual arts. In addition to the arts program, students study required and optional academic courses to earn their secondary school diploma. Students wanting to pursue the specialized visual arts program, will participate in an audition to determine the appropriateness of this program. Auditions are held in November for admission to the following September. Admissions decisions are based on the candidate's talent, their potential, their overall school performance and the student's ability to benefit fully from the program.  If the candidate meets the threshold he/she will go into the random selection (lottery) for a spot in the program.

There is a yearly Regional Arts Program (RAP) fee required to cover 'Artist in the Classroom', in-house concerts and performances, workshops, master classes, group clinics, professional artists, exhibitions, and many more.  Other material or field trip fees might apply for some courses.

Student Testimonials.

“The RAP program served as an instrumental step in my journey to becoming a more critical thinker and inquirer. Although I ended up pursuing post secondary education in Science, I found my learning and growth within this program continues to help me think creatively in an academic classroom, research more critically and become a better professional. The RAP program is not just a program that helps you refine your artistic skills, but it also helps teach you to become a better thinker and learner.”

“I always speak highly of the RAP program to my friends, family and colleagues. The reason being is I felt that my arts education led to me becoming a more well-rounded individual. To learn the arts is to learn about history and culture. The RAP program offered me opportunities to build and finetune my skills as a visual artist, which led me to pursue an arts education and become a teacher. I believe the program was integral in building my confidence and opening my mind to new and creative solutions. ”

— Kesha James

“My passion for visual arts has always been complimented on by my friends and family. The RAP VA program was able to help my passions flourish, developing my skills and ignite my creativity with projects that took me to the limits of my comfort zone. The history behind techniques and styles in visual arts guided and helped establish my own creative style. Beyond the art itself, the intensity of the demand from the program allowed me to develop critical time management skills, planning development and research skills. It also allows me to bring an aspect of creative thinking to other projects, making them more innovative and complex. Art is essential to bettering ourselves. ”
