Awakening Creativity.

Inspiring Excellence.

The Regional Arts Music Program.

Do you love music? Would you like to make music at school every day?

The Mayfield Music department is a welcoming, creative, safe and challenging environment for students who have passion and aptitude for music. We are committed to honouring the voices and identities of all of our students, and to diversity and inclusion across our program.

Vocal Majors

If you love to sing, come and be a part of our nationally recognized choirs and vocal jazz ensembles, and learn how to sing in every style from jazz and pop to musical theatre and classical. In our program you’ll learn excellent vocal technique that you can apply to all music in a healthy way. You can also take advantage of opportunities to get involved in learning about running sound for our vocal jazz groups – we have some of the best tech gear in the province and our students learn how to use it like the pros. As a member of our ensembles, you will get to perform in vocal festivals, concerts, and more both close to home and abroad. Best of all, you will get to sing every day in a class full of people who love singing as much as you do!

Instrumental Majors

If you play a brass or woodwind instrument, drums, percussion, bass guitar or double bass, the instrumental program is for you! In this program, you will get to play your instrument every day in class and you won’t believe how quickly your playing will grow and improve. You’ll get the opportunity to perform in our award-winning concert band and jazz band ensembles in our concerts and in exciting festivals across the province and beyond. You’ll be part of a tight-knit community of like-minded musicians who love playing music together, and who are deeply committed to musical growth!

Piano Majors

If you are a pianist, you can also audition for our program. Each year we have four spots for pianists; typically our pianists play at a minimum RCM Grade 7 level at the time of their audition. In the piano program, you will learn jazz and improv skills, improve your sightreading, and work closely with our vocal majors as an accompanist. You will also get the opportunity to perform with our ensembles.

Musical Theatre

Are you into musical theatre? We produce two full musicals every year and music kids are always onstage, playing in the pit orchestra, and running the tech backstage. You won’t believe how much fun it is to get up on stage and tell a story through music and acting, or to learn an entire score on your instrument so that you can play in the band for the show, or to be responsible for setting and running the lights and sound for the production. As a Mayfield student, you can even take courses in Musical Theatre and in Lighting and Sound Production for credit.

Student Travel

We believe that student travel is an important part of learning about music, and we run a major trip every year for our senior students. In the past, we have travelled to New York City, Florida, California, Italy, Austria, the Czech Republic and more – and looking ahead, we hope to offer trips to these and other exciting destinations around the world.

Mayfield Music is the place to be – we can’t wait to welcome you!
